Over $50,000 raised for Valor Scholarship Program at annual
The Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2010 Valor Golf Classic on June 8 at Westfields Golf Club. For the third straight year, the tournament was presented in partnership with signature sponsor The Volkswagen Group of America. The event raised $57,130, all of which went toward the Valor Awards and Scholarship Program, which exists solely to provide educational grants to the children of Fairfax County's Medal of Valor honorees from the Police, Sheriff and Fire & Rescue departments. Kevin Reynolds, President, Cardinal Bank, was named Honorary Chair for the 2010 Valor Golf Classic. Reynolds served as Chairman of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce in 2008-09. In addition to this leadership role at the Chamber, he serves as a trustee for the Valor Foundation, and was honored with the distinguished Valor Humanitarian Award in 2008. “The Valor Classic has become a tradition that does more than just raise money for Valor scholarship recipients,” Reynolds said. “It’s a way for the business community to come together in friendship and camaraderie to show our public safety servants that we are behind them. The Valor Classic is part of what makes Fairfax County a community - not just a place to do business.” Reynolds has a long and active record of community involvement. His volunteer efforts, business expertise and hands-on support have helped many worthwhile community partnerships and fundraisers for organizations such as the American Heart Association, the City of Fairfax Renaissance Housing Corporation, Rotary International, The Gladney Center for Adoption, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Special Olympics. The heat and rain held off on June 8 to offer the Valor Classic perfect tournament weather at Westfields Golf Club. Players arrived eager for a competitive day of play, networking and a chance for top prizes. Chamber staff and volunteers from Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office, PROforma SJM Agency and Grant Thornton LLP greeted players upon arrival and provided giveaways from generous corporate sponsors. Board Members, sponsors and players all enjoyed a catered lunch by Hooters of Fairfax before heading out on the course. Contests included Longest Drive, Straightest Drive and Closest to the Pin as well as Hole-in One Contests featuring a top prize of a Volkswagen CC 2 year lease sponsored by Lindsay Automotive Group. Players also participated in the RSM McGladrey Putting Contest, which was won by Mark Waters of Motorola. The Evening Awards Banquet & Reception offered players an opportunity to network with Board Members and Elected Officials and celebrate another great event in support of the Valor Awards & Scholarship Program. The Virginia Commerce Bank foursome won first place in the tournament followed by the Grant Thornton foursome in second place. The Chamber Board of Directors and staff expresses its sincere appreciation to all companies who supported the Valor Classic. A particular recognition to Wayne Corini, BDO Seidman LLP, and Doug Megill, McLean Insurance Agency, for serving as Chairs of the event , the Valor Golf Classic Committee and the Valor Golf volunteers.
